GRIEF SPECIALIST SERVICES

Grief Support can help you work through a myriad of losses, including: a death, a breakup, change or loss of identity, change or loss of a job, change or loss of abilities, health changes, and more.

Our grief can show up in many ways: psychological/emotional, spiritual, physical, behavioral, and cognitive.

You might be surprised to learn that there are Four Types of Grieving Styles (Doka & Martin, 1999). These include:

  • Intuitive/Heart

    • very emotional, feeling heavy, overwhelming waves of sadness/anger, daily activities can become difficult, withdrawal from others, strong emotional reactions

    • coping approaches: journaling, expressing emotions, support groups

  • Instrumental/Head

    • Expresses grief in active and cognitive ways, perceives grief as a challenge, doing tangible things

    • Coping approaches: needs to return to work immediately, “dosing” grief: set times to focus on emotions, one-on-one counseling

  • Dissonant/Heart vs Head

    • Disconnect between outward expression of grief and how it’s experienced internally; grief is suppressed

    • Coping approaches: dosing, creating a safe environment for expression

  • Blended/Heart & Head

    • Move back and forth between head and heart style of grieving

    • Coping approaches: head and heart approaches; depends on reactions to certain losses
